Here's my predicament...I have a toddler who doesn't eat "breakfast" food. He seems totally happy with his banana and peanut butter sandwich each morning, but I am looking for other ideas for the two of us.
What do YOU like for breakfast?

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Sun, September 20, 2009 - 1:18 AMplain yogurt and apple sauce; hot rice and cold pickled vegetables; miso soup; cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches; left overs. When my son was little, he liked just plain tofu, or cooked tofu with a little Bragg's (similar to tamari in flavor.) You might try polenta with a little cheese melted into it, or tuna salad with chips or crackers for dipping. (it's way better that way that in a sandwich!) Avodao mashed on toast with a little lemon juice is yummy. You might try apple slices with flavored yogurt for dipping.

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Sun, September 20, 2009 - 5:35 AMmine was like that too Lizzer...even now, at 17, he usually prefers leftover of whatever we had for dinner as breakfast. (As we speak , he is heating up a Lean Cuisine pizza.) It was easier to reprogram myself into considering any kind of food as breakfast then to reprogam him - and really, there was no reason for it. I'd rather he have a bowl of salad then a bowl of sugared cereal !
When I was out of leftovers, he went through quite a few cheese quesadillas in the mornings....they really only take a few minutes in a frying pan. (And if you'd rather for yourself, tuck some scrambled eggs and salsa in a tortilla :) ) I would also bake up a bunch of potatoes - he'd have them as plain baked, or I'd cube them up into quick homefries...
good luck hon !

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 2:21 PM98% of the time, I am a Cheerios and skim milk gal.
The rest of the time, I tend to be a scrambled eggs and toast or sausage gravy and biscuits gal.
Now and then I want waffles or pancakes, but those usually end up as lunch, because they take too long to cook in the morning.
Just don't forget, pancakes could be bread, so can waffles. And there's nothing wrong with peanut butter and banana sandwich for breakfast. There's plenty less healthy out there. My husband would rather have cold pizza or a cheeseburger… except that I'm not cooking either of those. -

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 2:39 PMthere are healthy cereals, good with almond milk or rice milk, if you are dairy free.
but if everything has been tried and it is peanut butter and bananas that are the only things acceptable, just mix a small amount of other things in with the mix gradually increasing the amount. .

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 6:25 PMActually peanut butter sandwichs are very good for you and the little one especially if you are using whole grain breid.
Old fashioned oatmeal takes 5 minutes to cook, at some fruit and milk or soy milk.
Cherrios and for my self I put sliced almonds on it and fresh fruit.
Poached eggs on toast.
Oat bran hot cereal takes only 5 minutes to cook. ad fruit for sweet or a slice of cheese for savory.

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Tue, September 22, 2009 - 7:46 PMHave you tried green smoothies? A bit of banana, some ice or yogurt, berries, and some spinach. It's really good! Tell him it's a breakfast milkshake. If you use berries (raspberries or blueberries), they will have enough redness to them that the spinach won't show. He won't even know there's any in there!

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 12:01 PMApples with cheese slices are a favorite.
My daughter is a huge fan of yogurt with some sort of fruit.
I am not a big breakfast food person unless it is that late Sunday morning thing that is usually brunch. I like hummus with carrots and celery. Or soup sometimes too if it is cold enough. -

Wed, September 23, 2009 - 1:00 PMDitto on BratCat's suggestions.
>>Apples with cheese slices are a favorite. <<
I like apples and peanut butter (I'm a little lactose intolerant).
>>My daughter is a huge fan of yogurt with some sort of fruit. <<
Greek Gods honey yogurt with granola and strawberries tastes like a decadent dessert - I love when I have it for bfast.
>>Or soup sometimes too if it is cold enough. <<
I have instant miso soup packets in my desk drawer at work - a great breakfast in a cold air conditioned building. And it's very healthy for you and as easy as adding hot water in a cup. :)

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 2:38 PMHmmm, I love Miso soap I'll have to look for the instant. I have trouble getting "unusual" stuff here in South Jersey. The closest place I could probably get it is an hour away. Not very economical. I finally found a Japanese/Chinese resturant that has it. -

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 2:55 PMOr you can just get it online :) www.amazon.com/Tofu-Soups.../ref=sr_1_6 This isn't the brand I get (that brand is exorbitantly expensive on Amazon!), but it's the same thing - little pouches that you poor into a cup, add hot water and stir.

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 3:39 PMwe might guess that soft foods are desired, that are somewhat sweet. selecting other foods that have those characteristics might be good, however, it might also indicate some problems. Are there any health issues related to physical function that should be considered?
Is there insufficient saliva or difficulty chewing harder foods? Slow moving bowels due to not enough fiber? A general lack of energy that eating sweet soft foods might be compensating for?? Maybe it is none of these things but it is always good to think about casuality. . -

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 6:06 PMLorenzo,LOL, do you have kids? They tend to stick with one favorite food at that age. It's really just all about learning and new tastes. Some Toddlers are incredibly afraid of new foods. -

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Wed, September 23, 2009 - 6:12 PMi think that taste preference indicates something. . .both in children and in adults. . .there have been studies that have been written about this, but it has been so long since i read one, i can't really cite anything. . -

Wed, September 23, 2009 - 6:13 PMWell there is a notion that carb cravings are a symptom of diabetes but I don't think it's valid.

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Sat, September 26, 2009 - 9:43 PMHe is a pretty adventurous eater for a toddler...except for at breakfast time. He wants a PB&B or PB&J sandwich. Every morning. It's working for him...I just don't want that for ME every morning.
Thanks for all these great suggestions!!!

Sun, October 4, 2009 - 7:19 AMHow about a green smoothie, looks like a mint shake, tastes better. Creamy, sweet (we all like sweet, plus healthy). 2 frozen bananas in blender, handful of fresh spinach ( you can't taste the spinach honestly) and a cup of water.Blend until smooth like a milk shake, My kids always loved this and still do. I have at least one a day most days. Try it I know he will love it and so will you.. Georgie -

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 2:03 PMThere really isn't much wrong a peanut butter and banana sandwhich! You can make it a bit better with high fiber bread and natural (or no fat added) peanut butter. For a change try different nut butters (almond would be best) and sliced apples instead of banana.
I make my own egg McMuffins. But I use "Double Fiber" (OroWheat) muffins, add a bit of mustard and use a minimal amount of shredded cheese. Canadian bacon is a good source of low fat protein -- along with egg and fiber muffin you are set. -

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 8:15 PMThere are so many great ideas here!! I'm not a breakfast person, myself, and my son is a teenager, old enough that I don't have to have breakfast "with" him now. (He still likes non-breakfast foods, though, like green beans and tofu.) So many of the ideas here, though, will make a great lunch or snack for me later in the day. Thanks, all! -

Sat, November 7, 2009 - 8:15 PMI like coffee and a cigarette,,,
That is.. if I haven't anything in the fridge..

An old pickle on the bottom of a jar..
A piece of cake that was left from my birthday... (two months ago)
It's not that bad if you combine it with the coffee.. y' know..

Re: Healthy Breakfast Ideas
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 7:33 AMIf you are cooking a "traditional" breakfast, don't forget to add a few veggies. (5 servings a day!) I usually have a bag spinach around. Before scrambling an egg I saute a handful (5 or 10 leaves) in the pan before adding the egg(s). It is it "to go" and dump the eggs on a muffin with a bit of cheese and enjoy it in the car while balancing a cup of juice and texting.
