I suppose not very lazy....this came about from wanting sushi but not having the funds to eat out....

I simply made sushi rice, got my nori ready. Then I filled the sushi with canned salmon, mandarin oranges (also canned) avocado and sauted mushrooms. I added some soy vay teriyaki sauce on the top. Needless to say it was delicious!

I used to make it all the time. I used all kind of stuff. SPAM and eggs. Imitation crab with avocado. I like broiled salmon skin with CA / Philly roll. Creme cheese. Oh yeah. I made only cucumber KAPPA MAKI. I made seaweed on outside and inside. If inside I roll in sesame seeds and tobiko. Mmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanx alot Nicole. It's almost 11pm and I am actually drinking my 4th small bottle of Ozeki dry sake and now wishing I had some salmon skin roll. Better than swinging a bag of heroin or pure coke in my face I suppose. : ) Now I want to make my own again. What kind of rice to you prefer. I havent tried alot of variety. Mostly just "Rose."

Rose is about as good as anything, but you have to make "suchi rice," or sweet rice, for it to taste aythentic. If you don't have a recipe, I can post it. Not really lazy, but not hard, either.

Oops. Sushi rice, not suchi rice. Making nigiri sushi instead of rolls is way lazier, and better, I think. You just squish a small amount of rice together in your palm, add a dot of wasabi, and top with whatever you like.

lol wouldn't it be nice to have an 'edit post' option on Tribe.

Just bought a mixed 6-piece container of store made sushi for lunch - wrapped each piece in extra sheet of nori from kitchen cupboard for 50% more delish. :)

i used rose all the time back home but its not as easy to find here in austin. now i just get the shortgrain rice that is sold in the bulk section at the co-op. i took a very basic sushi making class once and the teacher said as long as you rinse the rice really well then brand doesn't matter to much.

    Tri:

Those gizmos are WAY cool!!! My husband couldn't believe the German made one and thought it was a joke. I'll make him read the description a little more closely when he looks at it again.

I've seen the tray and box dealio before. Does it really work? For $20.00 that's a great deal. I have the bamboo mat thingy and it works OK, plus I have a book on making sushi and other Japanese related food.

I'm surprised your Japanese friend has never seen the Fuji sushi making machine before. I saw it a long time ago used in a restaurant. The top is filled up with rice and the cranks are turned and the rice comes out in the little rectangles. It makes the sushi rectangles fast for the chefs behind the counter. BUT, I wonder if your friend is on to something... tater tot making machine... it might work as that too!

Azeeza: The German rolling thing is basically a really big cigar/cigarette roller, totally genius! I haven't used the box sushi master kit in over a decade and when I did it was okay, but it's hard to say now since my cooking skills are now far superior than what they were then... I remember it was fun to do, but that's about it. And the little slots make it easy to cut sushi, but I find rolling on a bamboo mat fairly easy (the hard part is getting all of your ingredients together).

Yeah, my Japanese friend wasn't so pleased when I sent her the Fuji sushi machine. She's the one who commented "what is that? tator tots?" She a bit of a purist. Mmmm... tator tots...

an added tip: if using a bamboo mat, wrap it with plastic wrap first. that way any stray rice grains don't get caught in it. If y'all haven't seen it, sushiday.com is great!

so i just learned you could buy nori. i have a bunch of dried stuff, bout the size of fruit jerky. can i roll rice and canned salmon in this? do i need to soak it in water first?

Do not soak in water! You'll turn your nori to mush. The sushi rice's moisture will adhere to the nori. There's lots of "how to" videos out there - just check on out before you go for it. www.youtube.com/watch

The best thing to do with the nori (as Tri said, don't soak it!) us to very lightly toast it in a toaster oven before making sushi. You have to keep a close eye on it though, and take it out after inly about 10 seconds for a dull sheet--not sure how long for the smaller strips. The toasring helps to keep the nori from getting all soggy and gummy from the rice, but it still rolls well.
