I just simply love tumeric. Its flavor, aroma, taste. I do not like the hot chilis usually added, i cannot eat them, health wise.
I would love any recipes that utilize tumeric as a dominant flavor and ingredient in the meal. Its health benefits are numerous and fantastic.
so please, any healthy, non chemically based recipes would be really appreciated.

Re: Tumeric Based Food Recipes?
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 8:12 PMI add raw turmeric root (grated) to salad dressing and salads all the time. It tastes completely different than the dried powder- kind of a cross between carrot and dill flavors. Oh, my, you just reminded me to go look for some for my next salad.
There are several types of turmeric root and they're slightly different tasting=- a white and a yellow.

Re: Tumeric Based Food Recipes?
Sun, October 4, 2009 - 8:20 PMI've also been enjoying a mild version of that turmeric=ginger-honey-milk recipe from India that someone posted all over the herbal tribes a couple months back. It's hot milk (or rice or soy) with the three other ingredients, supposedly as a cold remedy. I found it a nice way to take turmeric medicinally. I think the fat in the milk is useful for absorbing turmeric, though I'm not sure where I got that exactly.

Sun, October 4, 2009 - 8:23 PMthe kicharee thread reminded me- I also grate fresh turmeric into kraut that I'm making, and it adds a really pretty color and an interesting flavor to kraut/kimchee/other ferments. -

Re: Tumeric Based Food Recipes?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 1:06 PMI've been enjoying that hot turmeric milk recipe, as well!
I finally tried it with my very painful frozen shoulder in mind. I don't even sweeten it- just turmeric and milk, then some black pepper after it's hot. It's filling and satisfying like hot cocoa, but of course without the sugar and such. I haven't used any ginger, because sometimes I just don't crave it- and have found that if I eat it anyway, my stomach gets upset.
The thing is, I've been having odd pains in my lower abdomen on and off since I started have a cup of TM per day.
I had my last cup three days ago, and still don't quite feel like myself, bellywise. I'll wait until this passes and try it again some other time to see if the turmeric is the cause.
Anybody else have issues with turmeric?
I can't find much about side effects/overdose topics, other than some sites that say it can *help* an icky stomach. -

Re: Tumeric Based Food Recipes?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 1:20 PMmaybe it's the milk, not the turmeric ? I find I'm slowly getting lactose intolerant since I hit 40...and that's just what I get, pains in my lower abdomen. I don't like milk so I don't often drink it anyway, but I started doing Slim-Fast shakes before the gym and that's when I discovered this. -

Re: Tumeric Based Food Recipes?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 4:37 PMpure, elemental lye (sodium hydroxide) will neutalize the lactose in milk products, if it is diluted to the right amount. (which skips my mind, cause i usually bye it, instead of prepare it.) -

Re: Tumeric Based Food Recipes?
Mon, October 5, 2009 - 6:50 PMBFG, interesting question!
lorenzo, that sounds cool!
I drink lots of *raw* milk, and eat plenty of raw yogurt. I haven't cooked with milk all summer, probably, so I wonder if that's the difference? I've seen plenty of suggestions that cooked milk is harder to digest.
Maybe I'll have some hot cocoa first when I test things out in a few days...
