i think so. it's a more compete protein, and it's done cooking in about 15 minutes... it's also super quick and easy to sprout - boosts the nutrient and amino acid profile many fold.

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 6:19 PMWow, I'd never thought of sprouting it! I believe that quinoa is considered the most nutritious grain of all. And, yes, it is a good source of protein. For those who don't have the sense to stop eating white rice *looks away, feels giulty* you can mix quinoa in with your rice and cook them together. Very tasty! And, hey, this IS a tribe for lazy people, right? Why wait 40 minutes for brown rice to cook when white rice cooks in about 15?! -

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 5:59 AMCan you buy it pre-soaked? -
-
Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 10:36 AMnot sure about that one. i've read posts in another forum where people soak 'em overnight (more thatn 4-6 hours) and they didn't sprout. Theory is they "drowned" 'em. Given this, and their very short germination time (less than 24 hours) i don't think presoaked is really an option.

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 7:24 PMI love quinoa! It's so simple and easy and so delicious. You can eat it so many ways too. I eat it for breakfast all the time -- sometimes with soy sauce, sometimes with yogurt and cinnamon. It's quick to prepare from scratch but I often make a batch ahead of time and then nuke up a cup in the morning.
I'd love to hear how other people serve their quinoa. -

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 7:55 PMCold quinoa salad! Cold quinoa (leftovers, perchance?) + finely chopped red bell pepper and red onion and cilantro. Add a sploosh of olive oil and mix it all up. Devour.
For a super duper protein blast, add drained black beans to this as well. Yum. -

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 7:56 PMI bet this would rock with sprouted quinoa, too.

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 7:57 PMthe other day i made a lot of veggie soup. then i got tired of it. i threw in a cup of quinoa and it soaked up all the liquid. voila! savory vegetable quinoa pilaf. -

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 10:28 PMI do this as well.
When I make soup I always have leftovers so I add some quinoa, sometimes millet, whatever I have on hand and yummm!
I love quinoa as a base for a taboule rather than "couscous" or "semolina", I usually add cranberries, pine nuts, lemon, mint etc, don't forget the mint!!!

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 6:14 AMYou don't have to soak quinoa--just sinse it to get rid of the soponins. -
-
Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 1:03 PMI know you mean rinse, not sinse. I just rinse mine too, otherwise it has a strong bitter taste and small sand grains.

I like to make quinoa tabooli...
I noticed they have Q flakes now at the co-op, so I may add it to my oatmeal... :P
You can buy quinoa flour online from the millers - add it to your pancakes... or bake with it
And Trader Joe's has multigrain quinoa bread...

Holy crap, never mind on the quinoa then.
-
Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 11:21 AMThe 636 calories per cup is misleading.... I think that is for 1 cup uncooked because I just looked at a box in my cupboard and it says a serving is 1/4 cup dry / uncooked is 170 calories... -
-
Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 1:49 PMand 4 x 170 = 680 -

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 3:02 PM4x170 = 680
True, but 1 cup of Brown Rice, Long Grain, RAW is 685 calories and 1 cup of Brown Rice, Long Grain, COOKED is only 216. So if the calories given is for uncooked quinoa then the cooked quinoa calorie count may also be much lower.

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 6:32 AMand 4 x 170 = 680 ...
AND, 4 x 540 = 2160 if you want to push four Big Macs in you...
How about a little restraint... 1 person = 1 serving -
-
Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 6:13 PMAH okay that makes sense now that it was explained a bit more. I didn't take into account that the ccolorie count was for uncooked quinoa.
Whew- I feel better now. Back to eating quinoa, huzzah!

Re: quinoa, better than rice?
Sun, March 2, 2008 - 1:58 PMHow about a little restraint... 1 person = 1 serving
Umm, that was just the point. 1 serving = 1 cup in some places and 1/4 cup in others. The point was to make the serving sizes equal to make a FAIR comparison. I'm not say quinoa/rice is better but if we are to compare by volume then the least that can be done is to make an equal comparison.
In part this is also why I posted my sources. The other reason whas the additional nutritional information the site gave for quinoa and rice.
