doesn't have much to do with food, but I know how diversely knowledgeable you guys are. So - I've always thought that one should not put insulated cups/dishes in the dishwasher. The point had been moot for years, since I didn't have a dishwasher (unless you count the teenager, which I couldn't really count on anyway) But I have finally moved into a lovely modern type house which includes a dishwasher, garbage disposal - even *gasp* CABLE TV!!
My fave giant coffee mug that goes to work with me does not have a warning on it. It's an Aladin brand. I swear there have been insulated mugs/cups that I've seen that warning on - do not wash in auto dishwasher - but now I doubt myself. What do you think? What could go wrong that it would be a bad idea to wash in the dishwasher?

Re: dumb question
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 10:20 AMPlease, don't consider me an authority or anything (not that you would!), but I do have a couple portable coffee mugs that did come with a "don't wash in the dishwasher" warning and I have done so anyway. I am fairly sure that, in my case, the aluminum on the mugs was the reason, since aluminum will often discolor as the result of dishwasher detergents. Yet, I have been able to wash these on the top rack of the dishwasher with impunity.
I wouldn't do it, say, with my ice cream maker bowl, which is insulated, or my aluminum Kitchen Aid mixer bowls, because I don't want to risk wrecking them and having to buy others. But, with the coffee mugs, I thought it was worth a shot, and so far, no problems.

Re: dumb question
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 11:45 AMTo prevent dis-colorization of metals buy dishwasher machine detergent that DOES NOT have lemon in it. Read is somewhere, then saw it on TV somewhere, and also learned the hard way. ;) The lemon in detergent is really harsh and reacts badly with some metals. -

Re: dumb question
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 12:21 PMok - these are plastic, and it's too late. I just ran the dishwasher. Seems fine. I did notice that a couple of my pots and pans have never been shinier! Oh, the joys and dangers of modern conveniences! -

Re: dumb question
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 12:30 PMmy plastic coffee tumbler says no dishwasher, but i think it's cuz it's the kind where you can put in your own pictures/decorations inside it and it'll leak. the very bottom has gotten wet before just from washing in the sink. -

Re: dumb question
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 3:40 PMI always thought that the reason not to was that it's double sided, and sealed. So, if one puts that in the dishywasher, the air inside would expand and break the outside. -

Re: dumb question
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 9:21 AMwell, I decided not to put it in the dishwasher every day, but once in a while, if it looks stained and I'm feeling lazy. The worst part is the buildup of chocolate (I like mocha) goo on the inside creases of the sealing lid. Icky. and those pieces are too small for the top rack, they'll just slip through the rack and melt on the bottom, so I have to take a Q-tip to it once in a while. Oh, the things I do for hot, cheap coffee. Certainly can't afford a hot mocha at the local drive through every morning!

Re: dumb question
Thu, August 30, 2007 - 11:59 AMI agree with Maggiemae. I have had to toss the occasional plastic insulated container because it's been dishwashered and ends up with moisture between the two layers of plastic. Eventually it gets gross in there, but you can't clean it out.

Re: dumb question
Mon, September 3, 2007 - 2:26 PMa time or two in the dishwasher won't hurt as long as it's in the top rack, but repeatedly doing this with the plastic ones will cause them to warp over time - the ones with stainless steel bodies tend to hold up much better...

Re: dumb question
Tue, September 4, 2007 - 3:54 PMSome are dishwasher friendly, some not. I like the idea about expansion breaking a layer of the cup...sounds reasonable.
Anyhoooo...if it had a gasket of any sort[to keep the top from leaking if overturned] DO NOT put it in the dish washer. -

Re: dumb question
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 12:55 AMI imagine this is probably getting to be a stale question, but I only just now found it - wash away! I run mine through the dishwasher whenever it seems they're getting a little icky, always on the top shelf. More often than not, though, I'll wash/rinse them at work using the superheated water from the coffee maker or the InSinkErator-thingy. The cups seem to hold up just beautifully, generally. The bigger issue, in my opinion, is just how much you *rock* for using a non-disposable cup for your mochas!!!!!
