I run mine through the dishwasher whenever it seems they're getting a little icky, always on the top shelf. More often than not, though, I'll wash/rinse them at work using the superheated water from the coffee maker or the InSinkErator-thingy. The cups seem to hold up just beautifully, generally. The bigger issue, in my opinion, is just how much you *rock* for using a non-disposable cup for your mochas!!!!! I have had to toss the occasional plastic insulated container because it's been dishwashered and ends up with moisture between the two layers of plastic. Eventually it gets gross in there, but you can't clean it out. The worst part is the buildup of chocolate (I like mocha) goo on the inside creases of the sealing lid. Icky. and those pieces are too small for the top rack, they'll just slip through the rack and melt on the bottom, so I have to take a Q-tip to it once in a while. Oh, the things I do for hot, cheap coffee. Certainly can't afford a hot mocha at the local drive through every morning! Read is somewhere, then saw it on TV somewhere, and also learned the hard way. ;) The lemon in detergent is really harsh and reacts badly with some metals. I am fairly sure that, in my case, the aluminum on the mugs was the reason, since aluminum will often discolor as the result of dishwasher detergents. Yet, I have been able to wash these on the top rack of the dishwasher with impunity. I wouldn't do it, say, with my ice cream maker bowl, which is insulated, or my aluminum Kitchen Aid mixer bowls, because I don't want to risk wrecking them and having to buy others. But, with the coffee mugs, I thought it was worth a shot, and so far, no problems. So - I've always thought that one should not put insulated cups/dishes in the dishwasher. The point had been moot for years, since I didn't have a dishwasher (unless you count the teenager, which I couldn't really count on anyway) But I have finally moved into a lovely modern type house which includes a dishwasher, garbage disposal - even *gasp* CABLE TV!! My fave giant coffee mug that goes to work with me does not have a warning on it. It's an Aladin brand. I swear there have been insulated mugs/cups that I've seen that warning on - do not wash in auto dishwasher - but now I doubt myself. What do you think? What could go wrong that it would be a bad idea to wash in the dishwasher?
