Yay for grass fed beef

Last month I happened on a posting on craigslist for the only people in my area raising grass fed beef. I just picked up my order today. It's all frozen so the only thing we've tried so far is the ground beef. Not only was it tasty, but there was no grease and the meat didn't "cook down" at all. Since the usable volume is so much greater than store bought beef I think we'll come out about the same on price.

Yippie.

Yeah, I get grass fed beef at my local farmer's market and experience the same things. Isn't it great to find healthy food?

What do you mean that it didn't cook down? That's so interesting!

I've never used ground beef (recovering vegetarian- I just haven't gone there yet) but when I do it will surely be grassfed and local!

Different stores put different amounts of water, preservatives and flavorings in their beef. Wal Mart is the worst. If you buy a pound of ground beef there you end up with a lot less than a pound of cooked meat. Schnucks is better, their meat cooks down less.

A local TV station even did a piece on this issue. They bought ground beef from 5 different sources and weighed them before and after cooking. Wal Mart came up short for them, too.

But this grass fed beef barely cooked down at all. I was very surprised. I've always compensated for the loss in cooking but this time I ended up with more meat than I needed for my recipe. What a happy surprise!

I'm lucky enough to know the beef I'm eating =0 I can see where they roam and what they eat!

Though, Dad's selling off all the cows... I'm hoping he keeps one or two so that we can butcher later on...

    mmm... beef!

<I swear, we could find a reason for every day of the year NOT to shop at Mal*Wart >
As someone who lives in a town with NO walmart, I am thrilled to avoid them, and will continue to protest their repeated attempts to destroy the capitalistic normalcy of NYC.
