Dear Friend,
A sanctuary in Bend Oregon now reports that their male chimpanzee named Topo invariably selects organic fruits and vegetables over those that are conventionally grown whenever he is allowed to choose. This chimp has the same discriminating nature as those at the Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark, who consistently chose to eat organic bananas when zoo keepers put both organic and conventionally grown bananas in the primates' cages as part of the zoo's program to earn a "green label" as an environmental zoo. What's more, the chimps eat the organic banana skin and all, but peel the inorganic fruits before chomping them down.
Results from research conducted on test animals may just be the most recent confirmation of what these chimps know instinctively: a diet of organic foods results in slimmer bodies, stronger immune systems and higher blood levels of vitamin E. The animals fed an organic diet also appeared to be more relaxed than those fed conventional foods.
Whether the chimps prefer the taste of organically grown fruit, are avoiding the pesticide residues on the conventionally grown varieties or are opting for the increased nutritional value found in organically grown foods, we agree with them that selecting organically grown foods whenever possible is an important component of a Healthier Way of Eating.

Re: Chimps Choose Organic
Mon, July 17, 2006 - 10:29 AMThis is fascinating! A friend told me once that her grandmother, a farm woman who lived to be over 100, often told stories about how she could remember a time when celery didn't have strings. My friend discounted these stories, thinking her grandmother must be confused. Then, recently, my friend had some organic celery for the first time. She tells me it had no strings! So interesting. Makes me want to try.
I am curious to know why the chimps chose one over the other - if it was a different smell or look. I'd like to read more about this if you know where there might be more info. Thanks for posting this.

Interesting. I'm wondering how they know. It doesn't sound like they take a bite first, to decide, so it seems like it must be by either smell or looks. Amazing, really!

Re: Chimps Choose Organic
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 8:37 AMI am fascinated by this idea. I don't know if anyone has ever done this kind of organic food research - at least not in any kind of organized way. I've written to the person who put out the newsletter Alice sites to try to get more information about this program. I'll update you with what I find. (I found both the sanctuary and the zoo in Copenhagen but I'm still looking for info on these programs or a contact person.)
Again, thanks for this interesting post. -

Most of the info she stated was in that article, but not all. I could not find a source for the rest.
