I would recommend checking out Jordan Rubin's book Perfect Weight America, it will get you eating properly prepared, nutrient dense whole foods, and eventually you may see anything else as non-food. I would say it meets your request for an eco-Atkins...you can adjust his recommendations to meet your body's needs as far as carb intake goes, but it's a great book to start learning about eating well for life. I also love Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig.

SB worked very well for me. I lost about 90 pounds in a year and kept most of it off for the next 3 years. But I think I've crossed some sort of metabolism threshhold and my weight's shot up in the last year. I'm back in school and too busy. I used to take hours planning my weekly menu. Can't afford the time any more. Fasting is definitely out -- too many vending machines on campus if I'm hungry.

I am intrigued and am considering a fruit/vegie fast. How long do you continue fasting? I really like the idea of resetting to default appetite and desires, as well as remembering what it feels like not to have caffeine in my system.
I have never tried fasting before and am wondering how long I need to do it to get maximum benefit without doing damage.

Medifast works quite well, my wife has lost 50 pounds, even though she is a type II diabetic.

Though I prefer to do juice/water fasts. If one is not used to fasting, eating just fruits and vegetables, but not at the same time.

The good thing about juice fasts, or just eating fruit and veggies, you not only loose weight, but cleans your body as well. I usually loose about a pound a day.

One of the benefits about juice and water fasting is, that your body cleanses, burns as fuel and kicks out what is damage, or what does not really belong. It also gives most of the organs in your body a rest, and allow them to better regenerate themselves. It seems to reset appetites and desires, to some default position. It also gives you more control of your body and desires and increases spiritualness.

In the beginning, it can be painful, headaches, nausea, achenes and etc, but in time you over come that and you find quietness and peacefulness when when you fast. Most of the ills today, can be controlled and or eliminated with a proper diet and fasting and the use of herbs.

although I should say, my former wife lost 60 pounds on the Atkins diet, then moved to the South Beach Diet and stablized.

It was a nice weight for her, but she wanted to lose more, which she did by moving from South Beach to a raw foods diet. . her complexion cleared up perfectly on the raw foods diet, as well. . .

the Fat Smash diet may work for you. Dr. Ian K. Smith – from Celebrity Fit club. Little sugar, little meat, little dairy, little grains, and egg whites more than whole eggs. Everything else is fruits, veggies, beans and nuts.

Look into it. It helped me a lot.

Does anyone have info on this? I need to drop a few. Last time I did South Beach which worked really well for me. This time I've been watching a lot of videos on what contributes to global warming and meat production is at the top of the list. So this time around I'm wanting to make some permanent changes toward considerably less meat, eggs and dairy.
