It was my New Year's resolution to stop drinking soda, I had such a bad addiction to the junk, and so far havent had any. I have found other, healthier drinks to replace it. ( I stay thirsty all the time.) One thing I found I really like is coconut water. Not many calories, naturally sweet, all kinds of nutrients and electrolytes, and I just love the taste of anything with coconut, but the supermarket prices are pretty high. I would be drinking more of it if I could find it cheaper... does anyone else drink it? Where do you buy it at an affordable price?

Re: Cheap coconut water
Mon, January 30, 2012 - 5:30 PMGrrl ? Where r u @ ? i own 39 coconut trees yet am stuck here in Hawai'i . ...
Coconut water shouldn't be confused w/ coconut milk everyone . Milk is better on plantains or breadfruit , taro & poi . Sweeter √
Having also lived > 20 years in the tropics w/ the U S Peace Corps and my career as a foreign service officer , it's like the Esquimoix ; i can tell you about a dozen names for coconuts d e p e n d i n g on the age and quality of it . Some have candy like cheese inside them . Those are the ones that are just begining to turn brown on the ground and sprout
My son ( one of 'em ) lives in L / A California u s a and i found that right down town there , there is an indoor farmers' market where the Spanish and Mexican Americans sell H U G E mangos for about fifty cents , right near that funky funicular tram way one can ride for about a buck
Just buy any old coconut any where ( they are all , all natural & organic ) and attack it with a long electric drill bit to get to the water , drain that out in a glass , then crack it open with a hammer ( or a saw if it's a green one - coconut trees are really grass and not trees - they are ! The nuts are the seeds . You can not make planks out of the wood )
Then eat what's on the inside
Eat bananas and plantains , too , another perfect food . Even here in Hawai'i they sell coconut juice in a can for about a buck $US1.00 h t h Ω /s Steve Dosh i see said the blind man as he picked up the hammer and saw . ..

Re: Cheap coconut water
Fri, February 3, 2012 - 8:59 PMI love coconut water. Yes, it does seem to be too expensive when bought in stores. The best way of course to get coconut water is straight from a green coconut, after someone has opened the top with a machete. But this is generally available only in tropical climates. I always look out for people selling green coconuts when I'm in India, Mexico or Hawaii.
So I've had a quest the past few months for the best tasting, most similar to fresh from the coconut, canned, bottled or boxed coconut water. They often taste very different from one another, some I like, others not so much. But none are cheap.

Re: Cheap coconut water
Fri, February 3, 2012 - 10:31 PMHere are the coconut waters commercially available that I recommend for best taste:
Evolution Fresh Cracked Coconut Water. It's hard to find, comes in a plastic bottle. Expensive but the best tasting.
Amy & Brian All Natural Coconut Juice. I like the variety that comes with pulp. Comes in a tall can. Tastes good but a little sweeter than actual coconut water that comes from a fresh young coconut.
Trader Joe's Coconut Water, cold pressed. Comes in a plastic bottle. This one tastes pretty true to a fresh coconut, but one that is not that sweet. Unfortunately it seems Trader Joe's may have stopped carrying it lately, I have not seen it in about a couple of months.
C20 is one of my favorites, it comes in a tall can. It's a bit sweeter than some, they say the coconut trees are inland away from salt water, and so naturally sweeter because of that.
Harvest Bay All Natural Coconut Water. Comes in a paper juice-type box. Tastes pretty good.
Coco Libre Pure Organic Coconut Water. Comes in a plastic bottle, one of the best tasting I've tried.
Naked 100% Coconut Water. Tastes almost as good as my favorites, and is probably the least expensive. It can be found at Safeway stores. The others are mostly found at health food stores.
Coconut Water is very healthy for you, and satisfying. I can see why you'd choose it in place of drinking soda. Soda is very bad for you, so good on you for making that switch! -

Re: Cheap coconut water
Sat, February 4, 2012 - 9:56 AMThanks to you both for the replies!
I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma; some distance from fresh coconuts lol... we don't have a Trader Joe's either.
Naked is the brand I have been drinking as it seems to be the cheapest, at $2.25 per bottle, not cheap enough to make a habit though. :( I did today find canned coconut water from a brand called Badia, its imported from Thailand. Seventy-nine cents per can, not bad, but the quality isnt as good, I don't think. It has more calories than the others, so I think they must put more sugar in it. 110 calories per can, not better than soda.:( Oh, well. Its still pretty good. -

Sat, February 4, 2012 - 7:46 AMThanks for that breakdown, Christie...that's super helpful. I've tried a couple and didn't care for them, but now I'll check out a few from your list. And, hey, we still need to get together when you have a few hours off...it's been forever! -

Wed, February 15, 2012 - 8:27 PMI just tried Cadia coconut water yesterday, too, and it's a really good tasting one. It comes in a tall can, I think it's $1.89 for the tall can.
